I mean, I know they are big trucks, and certainly bigger than they used to be. But enjoy this aerial footage of a very cool channel I found with a guy who talks way too fast then tell me that mid-sized trucks are basically 7/8th full size like the internet supposith.

For the first time, you can blame the intentional market for these bigger “small” trucks.
All the mid-sized trucks we have are based on existing international designs where big Americans weren’t a thought on the designers list. Which is why the new Ranger can’t fit a V6 in it.
You won’t find any traditional body on frame pick-up truck for the mainstream market (i.e. no Kei trucks, 3rd World city trucks or UTEs ) that is small, they are all mid-sized.

That’s a really good point. None of these trucks were designed for the US. They are basically the full-size truck of the international market.

They are all a good 6" narrower than an actual full size, which makes parking them a lot easier. Ob viously, not as easy as the old compact trucks of yore, but still easier.

more like 5/6th, (first gen Tundra is 7/8th according to my highly scientific math)

kinda? the T6 ranger is about the same as the us market one but the old colorado and the new one were very different sizes and we got the new size first. Plus the Tacoma and Hilux aren’t remotely related, the hilux being quiet a bit smaller.
As for the ranger, it wasn’t space that gave the ranger its turbo 4, I mean the T6 had a turbo i5 that took up a ton of room, nah they just wanted to be in the 300 hp range and ecoboost is Ford’s jam, which leaves them the 2.3T

The US market Ranger is exactly the same as the International one in all but the smallest cosmetic details.
The old Colorado? The current one is based on Isuzu D-Max platform that was introduced to the World in 2012. The current US Colorado was introduced in late 2014 as a 2015 model, i t’s almost on it’s 5th model year in the US.
As for the Tacoma and Hilux, you are right in that they are on different platforms. However, the Hilux is not “quite a bit smaller”, they are in
the same size class.
As for the Ranger, Ford stated it wasn’t designed to hold a V6 because the World model it’s based on wasn’t designed for that. If Ford was was going to make the Ranger with the US market in mind from scratch, they would have made room for a V6. But they are making do with a turbo 4, because as you say, it’s their jam anyways.

I feel like I am listening to a podcast on 2x speed. I’m saddened by lack of coverage on that Tahoe... I’m getting more and more interested in that body style to replace my Silverado in a couple years.

My buddy parked his new Raptor next to my Tacoma, and it sure looked like 2/3rds...
